Interview with Makii

What is your greatest achievement?
Idris: Starting with Makii, and to see children play with our designs, creating their own dream adventures!
Mielo: Definitely Makii! It's so cool to see little kids pointing at silly characters we've created and see them laugh! Yihaa!
How would you describe your work/style to someone who hadn't seen it?
I: Cheerful, and full of colours that will make your eyes explode!
M: Quirky and funny, full of characters that tell little stories, for instance about throwing pyjama-parties with giants! Or about playing hide and seek with elephants!
What piece of advice would you give your 15 year old self?
I: Do whatever you feel is right, like cartwheeling to school.
M: Rock your grandma's hand-knitted sweater and dance with the ladies all…..night….long! (repeat: all niiigghht)
When are you happiest?
I: When I'm working with my hands, for example painting a mural full of flamingo's or silkscreening a new print.
M: While creating new designs, shaking my bottom on beats by Siriusmo!
What is the worst job you have had?
I: Delivering magazines on my bicycle in the rain. It rains a lot in the Netherlands, you see.
M: Never had a really shitty job, to be honest. I once had a summer job in a sheltered workshop, putting welding masks together. The job self wasn't too cool, but surrounded by these cool people we made lots of fun!
Who would play you in the movie of your life?
I: Every random Bollywood actor alive.
M: Tom Cruise obviously, many people would agree -nudge, nudge, wink, wink!
What is your karaoke song?
I: The Guru, 'Chori Chori',http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyJc_lKULos
M: Hard to decide, 'No Limit' by 2 Unlimited http://www.youtube.com/watch
v=oKnwHAGXvlE or 'Stop the war,' by Speak http://www.youtube.com/watch
v=WIf7_ZDGSHQ- real deep!
What 5 things can't you live without?
I: The usual: Coffee, girlfriend, Wacom, fixed gear, and friends & family.
M: My girlfriend serving coffee with a Wacom tablet, while riding a home trainer in front of
my friends & family.
What is the greatest invention of all time?
I: The animation series, Adventure Time. I wish I invented it, it's..just..MATHEMETICAL!
M: The Super(b) Nintendo 16 bit, especially the game 'Double Dragon,' - did you see those
tough guys wear uggs?
If you didn't do what you do, what would you do?
I: I would problaby be a grey haired biologist with a love for bugs.
M: Rule the world by selling a machine that can fold underwear- just because it rhymes on
my last name (pouwer- 'onderbroekenvouwer').

Interview with Anna Lindsten

What is your greatest achievement?
Doing what I do, making it work and my family.
How would you describe your work/style to someone who hasn't seen it?
Colourful, graphic and playful.
What piece of advise would you give your 15 year old self?
Do it!!!
When are you happiest?
Working with something I really enjoy, and another thing is hearing my kids spontaneously laugh out loud.
What is the worst job you have had?
Was it even a job? Working for free, making flyers and poster for a photo exhibition at a small gallery and then their boss who had been away sailing around the world came back when my work was all finished and cleared by the curator, and he went to the printers and made them change type and colors! He changed to white type (and new font) and a light grey background to go with that. I was very glad I never put my name anywhere on that poster.
Who would play you in the movie of your life?
As people have told me there is resemblance, I have to say Emily Mortimer!

What is your Karaoke song?
If ever I would put myself in a karaoke situation, it would probably be Baby It's You with The Shirelles.
What 5 things can't you live without?
Coffee, music, books, films, penandpaper.
What is the greatest invention of all time?
Nintendo
If you didn't do what you do, what would you do?
Write

Interview with Rick Berkelmans

What is your greatest achievement?
I don't know... not one particular achievement but I am pretty happy with how things are going for me at the moment. People pay me to draw all day long. I live together with the best girlfriend in the world in a beautiful house and am really fortunate with my friends and family. Life is good!
How would you describe your work/style to someone who hadn't seen it?
I think my work exists out of a lot of contradictions. It looks really tactile and nonchalant but at the same time it also appears clever and professional. It is also quite positive and colorful but not childish. It has a certain vintage look and mid century vibe because of my love for printing techniques but the subjects are contemporary and fresh. So like I said, all kinds of contradictions that probably make the work interesting.
What piece of advice would you give your 15 year old self?
Don't be so shy
When are you happiest?
coming home after a productive day at my studio and finding out that my girlfriend has made some kind of special dinner like cheese fondue. I really like melted cheese hahaha
What is the worst job you have had?
I delivered the morning paper for 3 years when I was in high school. On one hand it was really cool to be up at 5 in the morning and walk outside. But it sometimes would be really bad considering the Dutch weather. A lot of people got wet newspapers.
Who would play you in the movie of your life?
Wow hard one, since I am only 27 ... I've watched a lot of Friends and I could always relate to chandler (Matthew Perry) because he is so silly and clumsy but really funny and a nice guy.
What is your karaoke song?
Haha I am a terrible singer and don't even listen to the lyrics. I think the only songs I can do are the ones of the Ski Leraar Bruin Money Gang album. A side project of some dutch rappers which is basically a complete album with rap songs about skiing, snow, and a lot of nonsense but really funny. I've listened to it so many times that I can sing along with the whole album.
What 5 things can't you live without?
My girlfriend Anneke, drawing, friends and family, food, movies
What is the greatest invention of all time?
melted cheese
If you didn't do what you do, what would you do?
My family exists out of a long tradition of butchers and bakers and I am also really interested in working with all these nice fresh products. Make sausages, burgers, roasted ham, grilled chicken... or maybe a chef. I really like to work with food i guess.
